DRIVESHAFTS BY MAKE AND MODEL

Driveshafts are used differently in different vehicles. They vary greatly in cars with distinct configurations for front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.

Above all, driveshafts are torque carriers. This means they are subject to torsion and shear stress. This is equivalent to the difference between the input torque and the load. Therefore, they must be strong enough to bear the stress, while avoiding too much additional weight. This would in turn increase their inertia.

Driveshafts frequently incorporate one or more universal jointsjaw couplings, or rag joints. This allows for variations in the alignment and distance between the driving and driven components. Finally, sometimes a splined joint or prismatic joint is used.

In addition, automobiles may use a longitudinal shaft to deliver power from an engine/transmission to the other end of the vehicle before it goes to the wheels. A pair of short drive shafts is commonly used to send power from a central differentialtransmission, or transaxle to the wheels.
